California Patent of the Month – October 2024

Neurolutions has developed an innovative device that revolutionizes the way brain activity is recorded, offering a more accessible and customizable solution for both medical and research applications. This device, designed for electroencephalography (EEG) recording, features a unique, multi-directional adjustable electrode assembly that enhances the precision and flexibility of brain signal acquisition.

At its core, the device consists of a first arm extending along the subject’s head, equipped with rails that guide the electrode assembly into precise positions. This assembly, which includes a shell, sleeve, and elastic components, allows the electrodes to be adjusted in multiple orientations. The electrodes are inserted into the sleeve with a turn-lock mechanism, ensuring stable contact with the subject’s scalp. This design enables a secure and consistent electrode placement, critical for obtaining accurate brain activity readings, even during repeated sessions.

Further, the housing contains essential electronic components, such as an energy source and circuitry to power the electrodes, while also providing easy adjustability for the user’s comfort. A second arm, which can be removably attached, extends along the subject’s head in a different direction, offering even more flexibility in positioning. The device is designed to accommodate individual needs, including stroke patients or those who require regular EEG monitoring, by making it possible for a single person to independently wear and adjust the device.

Neurolutions’ approach focuses on ease of use without compromising on the precision of brain signal monitoring, making it a promising tool for applications ranging from brain-computer interfaces to personalized medical treatments. This new innovation could make EEG technology more accessible and practical for a wider range of users, enhancing diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
