Colorado Patent of the Month – October 2024

GlobeImmune, Inc. has developed a groundbreaking pharmaceutical composition that combines two immunotherapy compositions to target disease symptoms, particularly cancer. This innovative approach utilizes a recombinant Ad5 adenovirus and inactivated yeast or yeast lysate, offering a novel solution to enhancing immune responses against various diseases.

The first composition consists of a recombinant adenovirus engineered to carry a nucleic acid sequence encoding cancer-specific peptides. These peptides trigger an immune response aimed at combating cancer cells. The second immunotherapy composition incorporates either whole, heat-killed yeast or yeast lysate, which plays a pivotal role in enhancing immune activity by stimulating a broader immune response, including the activation of cell-mediated immunity. By utilizing both components in tandem, the therapy aims to generate a more robust immune defense.

The integration of recombinant viruses and yeast lysate presents a unique synergy that enhances immune recognition and response. The use of whole inactivated yeast such as Saccharomyces or Pichia, in combination with the adenovirus, supports an effective immunological mechanism, potentially improving patient outcomes. This strategy may be particularly effective for cancers that evade traditional immune responses, offering a new avenue for immunotherapy.

GlobeImmune’s composition can be administered either simultaneously or sequentially, with the flexibility to target different or adjacent sites, enhancing precision in treatment delivery. By also incorporating the possibility of combining this immunotherapy with chemotherapy or radiation therapy, the company positions this innovation as a multi-faceted solution to treating cancer and potentially other diseases that compromise the immune system.

This dual-immunotherapy approach holds promise for more effective treatment of cancer, helping bridge gaps where traditional therapies fall short, and paving the way for future advancements in immunotherapy.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
