Indiana Patent of the Month – October 2024
Miftek Corporation has unveiled a groundbreaking measurement system that redefines precision in photon detection and optical analysis. By harnessing single-photon counting technology and advanced silicon-based photon sensors, this system achieves unprecedented sensitivity and dynamic range, addressing challenges in fields ranging from flow cytometry to materials science.
At its core, the system features a flow chamber and highly specialized detectors capable of counting individual photons at GHz speeds. This capability enables the detection of even the faintest signals, such as autofluorescence or Raman spectra, which are often beyond the reach of traditional detection systems. By using avalanche photodiodes (APDs) and silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) operating in differential Geiger mode, the system ensures rapid, accurate photon detection across a wide dynamic range—spanning up to six orders of magnitude.
The innovation extends to spectral analysis, where integrated dispersion elements and collection optics allow precise measurements across multiple wavelengths. With picosecond time resolution and advanced cooling mechanisms to reduce dark counts, the system is ideal for applications requiring high sensitivity, such as real-time cellular analysis, fluorescence quantification, and material characterization.
A notable application is laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), where the system excels in analyzing biological samples, optical components, and even consumable liquids with unmatched precision. Its capability to discern subtle molecular interactions or impurities makes it invaluable for next-generation research and industrial quality control.
Miftek’s measurement system not only enhances the accuracy of photon-based studies but also accelerates experimental workflows with its robust and versatile design. By setting new standards for sensitivity and speed, this invention empowers researchers and industries to explore phenomena at the quantum level, unlocking new possibilities in both science and technology.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
