Missouri Patent of the Month – October 2024

Biomed Valley Discoveries has introduced a groundbreaking approach to treating melanoma with NRAS mutations, leveraging a powerful synergistic combination of anti-cancer agents. The method pairs BVD-523, a selective inhibitor targeting the MAPK pathway, with LEE-011, a CDK inhibitor. This combination amplifies their effectiveness compared to using either agent alone, marking a significant step forward in overcoming the limitations of current cancer therapies.

Melanoma and other cancers with RAS mutations present a persistent challenge due to their aggressive nature and resistance to traditional treatments. Targeting the MAPK signaling pathway—a critical regulator of cell growth and survival—offers a promising therapeutic avenue. BVD-523 effectively disrupts this pathway by inhibiting downstream signaling, while LEE-011 halts cell cycle progression, attacking cancer cells from two angles.

This innovative combination therapy not only curtails tumor growth but also enhances cancer cell death, addressing both proliferation and survival mechanisms. Its versatility allows for further customization, as additional therapeutic agents, such as immunomodulators or anti-angiogenesis compounds, can complement the treatment for more robust results.

Research highlights the durability of this dual-action approach. In preclinical studies, prolonged exposure to BVD-523 demonstrated consistent inhibition of MAPK feedback mechanisms, while LEE-011 effectively suppressed cyclin D1, a key regulator in cancer cell proliferation. This combination achieved notable reductions in tumor progression while maintaining a manageable side-effect profile.

Biomed Valley Discoveries’ innovative treatment strategy not only provides hope for those battling melanoma but also opens new doors for addressing other RAS-driven cancers. By integrating precision-targeted therapies, this invention reflects the forefront of cancer research, aiming to improve survival rates and enhance the quality of life for patients worldwide.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
