Arizona Patent of the Month – November 2024
SynCardia Systems, LLC is redefining the future of cardiac care with its groundbreaking total artificial heart system. Designed for seamless integration into the human body, this innovative system offers a lifeline to patients suffering from severe heart failure, combining cutting-edge technology with biocompatible design.
At its core, the invention features artificial ventricles powered by advanced brushless direct current (BLDC) motors. These motors, encased within a biocompatible housing, utilize a unique cam-and-follower mechanism to mimic the natural contraction and expansion of the heart. Coupled with a lightweight, external power supply, the system ensures continuous functionality while providing patients with mobility and independence. The power supply is user-friendly, with intuitive controls for adjusting cardiac output, and wirelessly communicates vital performance metrics like heart rate and device status to an electronic device for real-time monitoring.
The artificial ventricles are designed to integrate with existing heart structures, connecting fluidly to the pulmonary artery and left atrium. This allows the device to support both right and left heart functions, ensuring synchronized blood flow throughout the body. The system’s modularity is a standout feature—each ventricle operates independently with its own motor and power connection, enhancing reliability and simplifying maintenance.
To ensure safety and longevity, every component is coated with biocompatible materials such as silicone rubber or segmented polyurethane, reducing the risk of complications. Additionally, the motors operate at ultra-low power levels, minimizing heat and energy consumption while maintaining exceptional efficiency.
SynCardia’s total artificial heart system not only saves lives but also elevates the standard of living for patients. By merging innovative engineering with patient-centric design, it paves the way for a new era in life-sustaining medical technology.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
