Alabama Patent of the Month – February 2025
Serina Therapeutics, Inc. has taken a revolutionary step in drug delivery technology with its groundbreaking POZ-lipid conjugates. These novel compounds are designed to enhance the stability and effectiveness of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), a crucial component in nucleic acid-based therapeutics such as mRNA vaccines. Unlike traditional polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based LNPs, which can trigger immune responses and lead to reduced efficacy, Serina’s POZ-lipid conjugates offer a non-immunogenic alternative with controlled degradability, improving safety and therapeutic performance.
At the core of this innovation is polyoxazoline (POZ), a polymer that provides superior biocompatibility and tunable stability. By attaching POZ to lipids via precise chemical linkages, Serina has created a versatile platform that can optimize LNPs for different therapeutic applications. These POZ-lipid conjugates not only enhance the encapsulation and protection of nucleic acids but also improve cellular uptake and payload release, ensuring a more efficient and sustained therapeutic effect.
One of the most promising applications of this technology is in mRNA vaccines, where the need for a stable, non-immunogenic delivery system is critical. The POZ-lipid LNPs enable repeated administrations without the risk of adverse immune reactions, making them ideal for long-term vaccination strategies and gene therapies. Additionally, the adaptability of these conjugates allows for customization based on specific medical needs, opening new avenues for personalized medicine.
Serina Therapeutics’ pioneering work in polymer-lipid conjugates represents a significant leap forward in drug delivery science. By addressing key limitations of existing LNP technologies, their invention paves the way for safer, more effective treatments, transforming the future of precision medicine and vaccine development.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
