Georgia Patent of the Month – February 2025

Counterfeiting and supply chain fraud continue to pose significant challenges for industries worldwide. Salvus LLC has developed a groundbreaking method for authenticating materials using a portable interferometric system. This innovation provides a rapid, reliable way to verify the authenticity of products across various industries, from pharmaceuticals to high-value goods.

At the core of this technology is an advanced interferometric chip with waveguide channels and a sensing layer. This layer is designed to interact selectively with taggants—unique chemical or biological markers embedded in products for authentication. When a sample is introduced into the system, it undergoes a precision analysis, mixing with a buffer solution to facilitate detection. The system then performs interferometry to determine the presence of the taggant, processes the resulting data, and transmits the findings to the user.

This method has extensive applications beyond authentication. It can track materials throughout a supply chain, ensuring their integrity and location accuracy. With real-time wireless data transmission, businesses can monitor product movement and detect anomalies instantly. The system is even designed to integrate with production equipment, providing automated shut-off prompts if authentication fails, preventing counterfeit products from entering the market.

Unlike traditional anti-counterfeiting measures such as barcodes and RFID, which can be duplicated, Salvus LLC’s approach leverages biological and chemical specificity, making replication nearly impossible. Additionally, the technology extends to fields such as pathogen detection, where rapid identification of resistant strains can enhance treatment strategies and reduce unnecessary chemical use.

Salvus LLC’s interferometric authentication system represents a paradigm shift in security and quality control. By offering a high-throughput, efficient, and scalable solution, it equips industries with an unprecedented level of protection against counterfeiting, ensuring authenticity and trust in global markets.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
