Ohio Patent of the Month – February 2025

Augmented reality is rapidly reshaping how we interact with the world—but MediView XR, Inc. is taking it to the next level inside the operating room. Their latest innovation transforms traditional medical imaging into interactive, real-time holograms, giving practitioners an unprecedented level of spatial awareness during procedures.

At the heart of the system is the seamless fusion of cone-beam CT or multidetector CT imaging with real-time fluoroscopy, forming a detailed, 3D holographic representation of the patient’s anatomy. This image isn’t confined to a 2D monitor; it’s projected directly into the practitioner’s field of view via an AR headset. With depth perception and stereoscopic visualization, users can view—and even manipulate—a holographic overlay that stays registered to the patient, tracking their anatomy and instrument positions in real time.

The breakthrough lies in how this system cross-references both 3D and 2D images simultaneously, enabling precise localization of anatomical structures and interventional tools. Whether it’s navigating complex vascular paths or placing a needle with pinpoint accuracy, clinicians can now interact with medical images in ways that were previously impossible.

What’s more, the system adapts as procedures unfold. Live fluoroscopy, tracked tools, and even ultrasound data can be layered into the holographic display, all aligned to the C-arm’s geometry for spatial consistency. This drastically reduces the need to look away from the patient or rely on mental reconstruction of anatomy from static images.

MediView’s invention doesn’t just enhance visualization—it redefines it. By anchoring advanced imaging in augmented reality, they’re bridging the gap between insight and action, turning medical procedures into precision-guided, immersive experiences.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
