Oregon Patent of the Month – July 2025

AgonOx Inc. has received U.S. Patent No. 12358968 for a new cancer treatment method. The invention, titled ‘Utilization of CD39 and CD103 for identification of human tumor reactive T cells for treatment of cancer’, focuses on isolating specific T-cells. This method could significantly improve the effectiveness of T-cell-based immunotherapy. The patent describes a way to find and use the body’s most potent tumor-killing immune cells.

A New Approach to Cancer Immunotherapy

The patented method identifies a unique T-cell population. These cells express two key markers, CD39 and CD103. Researchers found these “double positive” T-cells are highly effective at recognizing and destroying cancer. They can be isolated from a patient’s tumor or blood. Doctors can then expand these cells in a lab. Finally, they can be infused back into the patient to fight the tumor.

Personalized Medicine and Patient Outcomes

This invention supports a more personalized approach to medicine. The technology helps determine which patients will respond to certain therapies. It allows for the selection and use of the most tumor-reactive T-cells. This method could lead to better outcomes for patients with solid tumors. It applies to cancers like melanoma and lung cancer.

Broader Diagnostic Potential

The patent also outlines diagnostic uses. Detecting these specific T-cells in a patient’s blood can predict their response to immunotherapy drugs. This includes checkpoint inhibitors. A higher number of these T-cells correlates with better overall survival rates. This development provides a powerful tool for both treatment and prognosis.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
