Massachusetts Patent of the Month – October 2025
A new patent from MindMics Inc. marks a significant leap in wearable health technology. This invention ensures that in-ear devices can consistently capture accurate cardiovascular data, regardless of how perfectly the earbud fits. It solves a primary challenge in continuous monitoring by correcting measurement flaws caused by air leaks in the ear canal.
How the Innovation Works
The core technology is detailed in U.S. Patent No. 12440112, titled ‘System and method for leak correction and normalization of in-ear pressure measurement for hemodynamic monitoring’. When an earbud fits loosely, it causes an air leak. This leak distorts the pressure waves used to measure blood flow and heart function. MindMics developed a sophisticated method to detect these leaks automatically. The system then mathematically corrects and normalizes the resulting pressure signals. This process maintains the integrity of the collected data.
Real-World Health Impact
This innovation moves non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring into the consumer space. Hemodynamic data measures the movement of blood flow. Clinicians typically require specialized equipment for this task. By ensuring data accuracy, MindMics allows everyday earbuds to deliver clinical-grade vital sign insights. This advancement could enable early detection and management of serious heart conditions outside of a hospital setting. Reliable, continuous health monitoring becomes widely accessible for consumers.
