Missouri Patent of the Month – October 2025
The Internet of Things (IoT) just got a major intelligence upgrade. Ivani LLC has secured U.S. Patent No. 12449525, revolutionizing how smart devices perceive their environment. Titled ‘Systems and methods for distinguishing persons from other entities using network presence sensing’, this invention moves beyond simple motion detection. It uses existing Wi-Fi or Zigbee signals to determine if a moving entity is a human or something else. This breakthrough is critical for next-generation smart automation.
Sensing Beyond Motion
The core innovation, often called Wireless Network Sensing (WNS), turns common wireless communication hardware into sophisticated sensors. The patented method analyzes disturbances in the Radio Frequency (RF) field. By measuring the unique characteristics of these disturbances, the system can reliably classify the source. This means devices can differentiate a person entering a room from a pet walking by. Traditional sensors often fail this task. The distinction is crucial for accurate automation.
Real-World Impact
This technology unlocks true occupancy sensing. For smart buildings and homes, it promises enormous energy savings. Heating, ventilation, and lighting systems will only activate when a human is genuinely present. This capability enables more personalized security and resource management. Ivani’s patent offers a powerful, cost-effective solution. It removes the need for expensive, dedicated sensing hardware. This software-defined approach accelerates the deployment of intelligent environments globally.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
