New York Patent of the Month – November 2025
Medical diagnostics just got a significant speed boost thanks to a newly granted patent for fully automated tissue preparation. This technology targets the decades-old, manual bottleneck in pathology labs, promising faster, more consistent results for critical diagnoses. The innovation, developed by medical robotics company Clarapath Inc. , integrates robotics and data systems to streamline the complex process of turning a tissue sample into a microscope slide.
The Automated Workflow
The patent details an interconnected system that dramatically modernizes histology. A central control device coordinates the entire workflow. It communicates with the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) using a sample identifier. The system retrieves patient and sample data from the LIMS. Then, it automatically sets the precise cutting and handling parameters for all automated tissue processing components. This ensures optimal section quality for every unique tissue block.
Innovation and Impact
This connected approach solves major pain points in pathology: variability and traceability. Automating the creation of tissue sections and linking processing parameters back to the LIMS creates a robust digital audit trail. The system generates real-time updates while processing a sample block. U.S. Patent No. 12480962, titled ‘Connected systems for automated tissue section preparation and methods of use thereof’, enables high-throughput processing. This innovation significantly reduces diagnostic turnaround time, delivering faster results when patients need them most.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
