A new cooling technology aims to fight global warming by mimicking the natural effect of volcanic eruptions. Make Sunsets has secured U.S. Patent No. 12,486,031, titled ‘Atmospheric delivery of particulate matter’ for a system that can release reflective particles into the high atmosphere. This innovation could mark a major step in the growing field of solar geoengineering.
A Mobile Cooling System
The patented system uses a portable setup to send pressurized liquid high into the sky. It consists of a refillable container and a specialized elevation tool that moves between the ground and the stratosphere. Once it reaches a certain height, the system converts the liquid into a gas. This gas then reacts with the surrounding air to form tiny, suspended particles that can reflect sunlight back into space.
Global Scalability and Impact
Designers built the hardware to be highly mobile and compatible with multiple ground stations. This flexibility allows operators to deploy the cooling technology from various locations based on atmospheric needs. By using sulfur dioxide to create sulfate particles, the invention provides a mechanical way to reduce the amount of solar heat reaching the Earth’s surface. This approach offers a potential tool for rapid climate intervention while scientists continue to work on long-term carbon reduction goals.
