Alaska Patent of the Month – February 2025
As part of Swanson Reed’s ongoing series on Alaska’s innovation and patents, we examine the Patent of the Month for February 2025. This month, however, no new utility patents were filed in Alaska.
While this might seem surprising, it doesn’t mean innovation has slowed. Instead, it highlights the cyclical nature of the patent process—research, development, and filing can take months or even years. Many Alaskan inventors and businesses are likely in the early stages of securing patents for groundbreaking ideas.
Why No Patents in February?
Alaska remains a hub for innovation, particularly in:
-
Energy solutions (renewable energy, oil & gas technology)
-
Environmental engineering (sustainability, climate adaptation)
-
Resource management (mining, fisheries, forestry)
The lack of new patents this month simply means that many projects are still in development. The patent filing process is lengthy, and breakthroughs often take time before they’re ready for legal protection.
The Future of Innovation in Alaska
Even without new patents in February, Alaska’s research and development efforts remain strong. Many cutting-edge inventions are still in progress, and we expect to see new patent filings in the coming months.
At Swanson Reed, we specialize in intellectual property (IP) strategy and patent support for Alaskan innovators. If you’re developing a new technology or product, our team can help you navigate the patent application process and protect your ideas.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
