Arizona Patent of the Month – December 2025

Arizonan innovators have unveiled a breakthrough in adaptive optics that could change how we control light in everyday environments. Polyceed Inc. recently secured U.S. Patent No. 12509471, titled ‘Electrochromic dyes and their use in electrochromic devices’. This technology introduces specialized dyes that allow glass and other surfaces to change color or opacity with remarkable precision.

Advancing Smart Surface Technology

Traditional smart glass often faces limits in speed and color consistency. The new invention solves these issues by using bridged electrochromic dyes. These unique molecules link different light-absorbing components together. This structure ensures that the material responds faster and remains more stable over time. By mixing these bridged dyes with standard ones, the team has created a more reliable way to manage light transmission.

Impact on Energy and Comfort

The real-world benefits of this R&D focus on efficiency and user experience. These dyes can be integrated into windows for homes and offices to block heat automatically. This reduces the need for air conditioning and lowers energy bills. Beyond buildings, the technology fits perfectly into automotive sunroofs and high-tech eyewear. Users can enjoy instant shading without the need for mechanical blinds or heavy shutters.

Precision Engineering for the Future

Polyceed Inc. designed this system to work between clear, conductive surfaces. This setup allows for thin, lightweight devices that are easy to manufacture. The ability to fine-tune the dye mixture means developers can create specific colors for different industrial needs. This patent marks a major step toward making responsive, energy-saving surfaces a standard feature in modern architecture and transport.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
