California Patent of the Month – November 2025

A new U.S. patent reveals an innovative approach to dental implant technology, promising a faster, less invasive path to tooth replacement. iDentical Inc. has secured U.S. Patent No. 12458472, titled ‘Root-analog dental implants and systems, devices, and methods for designing and manufacturing same’. This invention allows for immediate fitting into the space left by a tooth extraction.

The innovation focuses on creating an implant that perfectly mimics the removed tooth root’s geometry. This design eliminates the need for extensive modification of the alveolar socket. Current procedures often require drilling or shaping the jawbone to accommodate standard cylindrical implants.

Anatomical Precision and Strength

The root-analog implant uses a specialized internal structure. It features a central core providing robust mechanical strength. Crucially, the core’s centerline curvature is designed to match the extracted root’s centerline. This ensures an optimal fit.

Extending from the core are supportive struts. These struts stabilize the structure. The implant is covered by a porous surface that encourages osseointegration, or bone growth onto the implant. This porous layer may feature interconnected elements or cavities. This surface roughness aids in faster, stronger biological attachment.

Manufacturing and Real-World Impact

The patent highlights an additive manufacturing process (3D printing) for creation. This digital workflow allows for rapid, customized production. The ability to fit the implant into an unmodified alveolar socket dramatically reduces procedure time and patient recovery. This advancement shifts the dental implant field toward personalized, single-stage solutions, offering greater mechanical support and biological stability from day one.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
