A new patent from Doroni Aerospace Inc. introduces a novel wing fence design aimed at enhancing the performance of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. U.S. Patent No. 12312080, titled ‘Wing fences for VTOL aircraft’, details how these rear-mounted, curved fins minimize disruptive airflow into wing-embedded lift fans, thereby improving stability and efficiency.
Enhancing eVTOL Aerodynamics
Traditional wing fences are planar structures used to control airflow over wings. Doroni’s innovation features short, curved fins positioned near the rear of fan inlets on the wing’s upper surface. These fins deflect boundary-layer air away from the fan openings, reducing spanwise airflow that can cause turbulence and decrease lift. The design aims to maintain smoother airflow across the wing, enhancing the lift-to-drag ratio and overall aerodynamic performance.
Real-World Applications
The patented wing fence design is particularly beneficial for eVTOL aircraft like Doroni’s H1-X model, which incorporates lift fans within its wings. By mitigating airflow disturbances caused by these fans, the wing fences contribute to more predictable handling and improved flight efficiency.
