Georgia Patent of the Month – April 2025
Daykin Molecular Systems has introduced a patented solution that keeps RNA stable for up to 180 days at temperatures ranging from -20°C to +38°C. This innovation, detailed in U.S. Patent No. 12263217, titled “Nucleic acid stabilizing solution for vaccines, therapy, diagnostics, storage, and transport,” could transform the storage and distribution of RNA-based products by reducing reliance on cold chain logistics.
Breakthrough in RNA Preservation
The patented solution comprises a chelating agent (such as EDTA), a buffering agent (like TRIS), and a salt (NaCl). This composition protects RNA and RNA-based vaccines from degradation, maintaining their stability for extended periods at ambient temperatures. Importantly, the solution is safe for injection into mammals, making it suitable for therapeutic applications.
Real-World Applications
This technology has significant implications for vaccine distribution, especially in regions lacking reliable refrigeration. By enabling room-temperature storage, it simplifies logistics and reduces costs. Additionally, it benefits research and diagnostic fields by preserving RNA samples without the need for cold storage.
Industry Impact
Daykin Molecular Systems’ innovation addresses a critical need in biotechnology and healthcare. By providing a reliable method for RNA stabilization at ambient temperatures, it supports the broader adoption of RNA-based therapies and diagnostics, particularly in resource-limited settings.
