Georgia Patent of the Month – November 2025
A significant innovation in surgical care and wound closure has emerged with the granting of U.S. Patent No. 12458355. This new ‘Medical device for applying force on biological tissue, or the like’ offers a non-invasive, mechanical approach to tissue approximation. The device, developed by BRIJ Medical Inc. , uses advanced materials science to improve healing efficiency. It provides a controlled, dynamic force superior to traditional closures like sutures or staples.
A Multistable Approach to Tissue Approximation
The core of the technology is a reconfigurable, or multistable, structure. This structure has two stable shapes: concave-up and concave-down. When a surgeon manually transitions the device from one stable state to the other, it automatically generates the required force. This transition pulls adhesive-coated struts inward. These struts adhere directly to the biological tissue. As the struts move, they draw the tissue edges closer together. This closing action is automatic once the device passes its unstable equilibrium point.
Real-World Surgical Impact
The device’s automatic closure mechanism ensures consistent, uniform tissue tension. This reduces strain, which can lead to better cosmetic outcomes and faster recovery. It is designed to replace or assist traditional wound closure methods in various surgical settings. This novel approach simplifies the approximation process. It offers precise force application critical for successful healing.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
