Indiana Patent of the Month – May 2022

Off road vehicles usually include a cage of some form to protect the rider during a rollover. A windshield can be positioned within the cage to provide some barrier between the rider, rain, and bugs. These windshields are normally set up to either be a full windshield extending from top to bottom, a half windshield, or a flip windshield. Each design has a different purpose but are not easily interchanged. Super ATV, LLC has designed a configurable windshield that can be modified on the go.

Their design can be:

  1. Full windshield – providing full coverage of the cockpit;
  2. Flip-down windshield – providing airflow to the cockpit ;
  3. Half windshield – detachable upper portion allows more airflow for hot days, keeps the dust flow in your cab down and may be easier to see through in muddy or rainy conditions.

To achieve this adaptability, the windshield is set up with a hinge that allows the top half of the windshield to fold down smoothly. The hinge is also detachable so that the top half can easily be removed. The entire windshield attaches to the vehicle using heavy-duty clamps and a slip-proof metal cross brace. A series of gas struts prevents the windshield from closing unexpectedly or bouncing up and down.
