Indiana Patent of the Month – September 2024
EnPower, Inc.‘s latest innovation in electrochemical cell technology introduces a groundbreaking multilayer electrode design that holds promise for the future of energy storage. At its core, the invention leverages a unique combination of active material particles and non-active ceramic particles arranged in distinct layers on the electrode. The first layer, adjacent to the current collector, comprises smaller active material particles, while the second layer—sandwiched between the first layer and the separator—features a blend of larger active material particles and non-active ceramic particles. These ceramic particles, with their mesoporous or macroporous structure, act as ion-conducting channels, enhancing the cell’s overall efficiency.
The non-active ceramic particles serve a crucial role in improving ionic conductivity between the layers. Their size, designed to match the thickness of the second layer, allows for better ion movement, which is essential for maximizing the battery’s performance. By incorporating materials like alumina and optional magnetic coatings, EnPower has ensured that the cell’s structure supports a more stable, long-lasting energy storage solution. This advanced design is especially significant for lithium-ion battery technologies, where balancing energy density and longevity is critical.
EnPower’s innovation addresses the growing demand for more efficient, durable, and environmentally friendly batteries, positioning itself at the forefront of energy storage advancements. This invention offers the potential to revolutionize battery performance in industries ranging from electric vehicles to renewable energy systems, paving the way for more sustainable energy solutions.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
