Colorado and the R&D Tax Credit
The Colorado Research and Development Income Tax Credit for Enterprise Zones is a permanent incentive available to both corporations and flow-through entities. This valuable credit rewards qualified research activities performed exclusively within the state. Uniquely, the Colorado credit only adopts one federal requirement: expenses must simply meet the definition of research and experimental expenditures. Taxpayers are not required to currently deduct their expenditures, allowing businesses to easily claim this state credit for certain activities that might not qualify for the federal counterpart. While no carryback is permitted, businesses can benefit from an unlimited carryforward period for any unused tax credits.
