Nevada inventionINDEX August 2026: 1.65% (C+ grade)
The inventionINDEX measures innovation output by comparing GDP growth with patent production growth.
Anything over C grade is positive sentiment; anything under C is negative outlook/sentiment. Using that sentiment, it is possible to observe trends over time, and also compare states/countries. In doing so, we can predict which states have the best chance to recover economically from the pandemic (or any other economic incident that may occur).

The August 2026 Nevada inventionINDEX score of 1.65% with a C+ rating reflects a steady rebound compared to the broader historical trend. Sitting comfortably above the 60-month average of 1.09% and median of 0.94%, this recent score demonstrates renewed momentum following a brief dip in April 2026 to 0.65%. While remaining below the historical peak of 3.85% recorded in February 2024, the current metric indicates a healthy position relative to early dataset lows, such as the -0.06% observed in January 2022.
Examining the multi-year trajectory reveals distinct structural phases across the regional innovation landscape. The index transitioned from a prolonged underperforming stretch throughout late 2021 and 2022, where scores frequently languished in D-range territory, into a substantially stronger baseline between 2024 and 2026. Frequent occurrences of C+ and B-tier ratings in recent months highlight higher operational stability, confirming that the overall ecosystem has established stronger performance floors than in previous cycles.
Elevating the index score into higher grade tiers yields substantial economic and institutional advantages. Higher scores, particularly those reaching B to A+ levels, signal robust intellectual property generation, enhanced venture capital recruitment, and accelerated technology commercialization. These elevated marks bolster founder confidence, attract top-tier technical talent, and encourage institutional partners to allocate long-term funding toward regional research and development initiatives.
Conversely, persistent drops in the inventionINDEX score toward D-level ratings present clear systemic headwinds. Lower scores reflect slowing patent output, sluggish startup formation, and operational friction within commercialization pipelines. Sustained sub-par performance risks dampening investor enthusiasm, driving talent emigration to competing technology hubs, and eroding regional economic resilience, underscoring the vital importance of maintaining consistent innovation growth.
Discussion:
In August, the Nevada inventionINDEX scored a positive sentiment which was higher than the previous year’s average and outperformed the upward trend for the year. This is similar to the prior 12 months, which experienced a considerable upward trend.
As the economy continues to stabilize in the post-pandemic era, it remains uncertain whether any backlog of applications still exists or if the department has returned to normal processing timelines. The inventionINDEX could also be affected by lingering consequences from the pandemic, such as company closures, reduced workforces, and limited R&D capabilities, which may still be impacting current operations.
