South Carolina inventionINDEX August 2026: 1.65% (A grade)
The inventionINDEX measures innovation output by comparing GDP growth with patent production growth.
Anything over C grade is positive sentiment; anything under C is negative outlook/sentiment. Using that sentiment, it is possible to observe trends over time, and also compare states/countries. In doing so, we can predict which states have the best chance to recover economically from the pandemic (or any other economic incident that may occur).

| Month | inventionINDEX SCORE |
|---|---|
| August 2026 | 1.65% |
| July 2026 | 1.32% |
| June 2026 | 1.71% |
| May 2026 | 1.82% |

| March 2026 | 1.71% |

| October 2025 | 1.08% |
| September 2025 | 1.93% |
| August 2025 | 1.41% |
The South Carolina inventionINDEX score for August 2026 registered at 1.65% with an ‘A’ rating, demonstrating a strong upward recovery from July 2026, which logged 1.32% with a ‘B’ rating. This latest score exceeds the 60-month historical average of 1.42% and surpasses the trailing 12-month average of 1.49%. While August remains slightly lower than the recent high-water marks of May 2026 at 1.82% and March 2026 at 1.71%, the score reflects robust momentum that places the state’s current innovation performance well within the upper tier of its multi-year baseline.
Evaluating the broader 60-month historical dataset highlights a dynamic cyclical trajectory defined by significant swings between regional peaks and troughs. The index reached its absolute maximum in September 2025 at 1.93% (‘A+’), whereas its historical low occurred in July 2022 at 1.06% (‘C’). The data reveals that recent years, particularly 2025 and 2026, have produced more frequent ‘A+’ and ‘A’ tier ratings than the 2021–2022 period, signaling a structural elevation in the state’s ongoing intellectual property output over time.
A higher inventionINDEX score and corresponding top-tier grade bring substantial economic and strategic benefits to South Carolina. Sustained high marks reflect increased patent filings, active commercialization of academic research, and strong entrepreneurial vitality. These metrics enhance regional prestige, attracting venture capital funding, corporate research partnerships, and highly skilled technical talent. Furthermore, consistent top-tier performance reinforces institutional confidence among stakeholders, encouraging further investment in advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, and emerging tech sectors.
In contrast, lower scores and downgraded ratings, such as ‘C’ or ‘C+’, present notable headwinds for the regional economy. Subdued performance indicates a stagnant research pipeline, reduced venture activity, and potential bottlenecks in translating laboratory discoveries into market-ready products. If lower scores persist, South Carolina risks capital flight and brain drain to neighboring regions with stronger innovation ecosystems, ultimately undermining long-term job growth and economic resilience.
Discussion:
In August, the South Carolina inventionINDEX scored a positive sentiment which was higher than the previous year’s average and outperformed the upward trend for the year. This is similar to the prior 12 months, which experienced an upward trend.
As the economy continues to stabilize in the post-pandemic era, it remains uncertain whether any backlog of applications still exists or if the department has returned to normal processing timelines. The inventionINDEX could also be affected by lingering consequences from the pandemic, such as company closures, reduced workforces, and limited R&D capabilities, which may still be impacting current operations.
