Washington inventionINDEX July 2026: 1.15% (C+ grade)

The inventionINDEX measures innovation output by comparing GDP growth with patent production growth.

Anything over C grade is positive sentiment; anything under C is negative outlook/sentiment. Using that sentiment, it is possible to observe trends over time, and also compare states/countries. In doing so, we can predict which states have the best chance to recover economically from the pandemic (or any other economic incident that may occur).

Historical Washington inventionINDEX Scores

The Washington inventionINDEX score for the past 12 months is shown in the table below.

Month inventionINDEX SCORE
July 2026 1.15%
June 2026 1.36%
May 2026 1.18%
April 2026 1.08%
March 2026 1.37%
February 2026 1.18%
January 2026 1.12%
December 2025 1.36%
November 2025 1.17%
October 2025 1.27%
September 2025 1.38%
August 2025 1.22%
July 2025 1.59%

The July 2026 Washington inventionINDEX score of 1.15 percent, which corresponds to a C+ rating, reflects a notable dip from the previous month’s score of 1.36 percent (B-) and stands well below the July 2025 mark of 1.59 percent (B+). Across the 60-month historical landscape spanning from mid-2021 through mid-2026, the overall average index score rests at approximately 1.38 percent. The latest metric positioning indicates that current invention activity is running beneath the historical baseline, remaining considerably distant from peak historical milestones such as the 2.28 percent (A+) recorded in April 2022. However, the current reading still avoids the historical floor of 0.96 percent (C-) observed in April 2025, suggesting a period of moderate stabilization within lower-tier territory rather than severe contraction.

Achieving higher scores and elevated letter grades yields significant strategic advantages for the regional innovation ecosystem. Historical peaks, such as the A-range scores recorded in late 2022, early 2024, and late 2023, signal strong patent velocity, robust research and development expenditure, and accelerated enterprise creation. High inventionINDEX ratings foster investor confidence, attracting venture capital into emerging technologies while encouraging strategic partnerships between academic institutions and commercial enterprises. Furthermore, elevated innovation scores typically correlate with heightened economic resilience, increased intellectual property output, and expanded job creation in high-value sectors.

Conversely, prolonged periods of lower scores and declining ratings present distinct challenges for economic development. When the index drops into the C range, as seen in April 2025 (0.96 percent) and July 2026 (1.15 percent), it highlights potential bottlenecks in technology transfer, reduced corporate spending on creative initiatives, or broader market hesitancy. Lower index values indicate reduced intellectual property generation, which can impair competitive positioning relative to neighboring regions. Over time, persistent weakness in the score threatens to decelerate capital inflows and hinder the commercialization pipeline for groundbreaking research.

Navigating these cyclical fluctuations requires proactive collaboration among policymakers, institutional investors, and industrial leaders. Over the past 60 months, the Washington inventionINDEX has demonstrated clear elasticity, repeatedly rebounding from C-tier downturns back into A and B territory. By establishing targeted incentives for research investment, streamlining patent commercialization pathways, and supporting high-growth start-ups, stakeholders can create the structural momentum required to elevate the score back toward its upper historical thresholds.

Discussion:

In July, the Washington inventionINDEX scored a positive sentiment which was lower than the previous year’s average and underperformed the downward trend for the year. This is similar to the prior 12 months, which experienced a slight downward trend.

As the economy continues to stabilize in the post-pandemic era, it remains uncertain whether any backlog of applications still exists or if the department has returned to normal processing timelines. The inventionINDEX could also be affected by lingering consequences from the pandemic, such as company closures, reduced workforces, and limited R&D capabilities, which may still be impacting current operations.
