Iowa Patent of the Month – September 2024
R&D Industries, Inc. (RDI) has developed an innovative connection validation system that ensures seamless internet connectivity, even when primary networks fail. This technology centers around a failover appliance that communicates with both primary and secondary (failover) connections to maintain uninterrupted network performance. When the primary connection is disrupted, the system automatically switches to the secondary connection, ensuring that network downtime is minimized and productivity remains intact.
At the heart of this invention is the real-time monitoring of network health through a probe that tracks packet transmissions between the server and network connections. The system uses advanced algorithms to analyze latency, packet loss, and other key performance indicators to determine the quality of both primary and failover connections. If issues are detected, it triggers a failover or load-balancing action, ensuring uninterrupted service.
What sets RDI’s system apart is its ability to predict potential network failures before they occur, using pattern recognition to detect emerging issues. The system not only switches to secondary connections but also transitions traffic back to the primary network once it stabilizes, avoiding unnecessary reliance on costly failover connections. By providing detailed connection statistics and minimizing false positives or negatives, RDI’s solution offers a robust and reliable method for businesses to maintain consistent connectivity. This breakthrough is vital for enterprises seeking to ensure business continuity in the face of network interruptions, offering a smarter, more responsive approach to internet failover management.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
