KANSAS INVENTIONINDEX | NOVEMBER 2025
November 2025: 1.82% (B+ grade)

Kansas inventionINDEX November 2025: 1.82% (B+ grade)
The inventionINDEX measures innovation output by comparing GDP growth with patent production growth.
Anything over C grade is positive sentiment; anything under C is negative outlook/sentiment. Using that sentiment, it is possible to observe trends over time, and also compare states/countries. In doing so, we can predict which states have the best chance to recover economically from the pandemic (or any other economic incident that may occur).

The Kansas inventionINDEX for November 2025, which stands at 1.82 with a rating of B+, demonstrates a performance that is moderately above the historical trend. Over the recorded 61-month period, the average inventionINDEX Score is 1.67, placing the most recent result comfortably above the long-term mean. Furthermore, this score is a notable improvement over the preceding 12-month average of 1.59, suggesting a recent positive momentum. While the index has reached a high of 2.32, indicating room for further ascent, the November figure reflects a robust and solid standing, separating it from the low-water mark of 1.05 observed in the historical data.
A sustained or improving high grade in the inventionINDEX, such as the current B+, signals a powerfully positive environment for economic activity and innovation. A higher score is typically indicative of a thriving ecosystem that effectively encourages and commercializes new ideas and technologies. This vitality can translate into significant positive outcomes, including attracting venture capital and external investment, which are critical for scaling new enterprises. Moreover, a high inventionINDEX score enhances the state’s reputation as a center for talent, leading to the retention and recruitment of a highly skilled workforce, thereby cementing the foundation for long-term, knowledge-based economic growth.
Conversely, any persistent decline or a significantly low grade on the inventionINDEX carries material negative implications for the state’s economic future. A score closer to the historical minimum of 1.05 would suggest a deceleration or stagnation in the pace of innovation. This lack of inventive dynamism can diminish Kansas’s competitiveness relative to peer economies, making it less appealing to cutting-edge industries and entrepreneurial endeavors. Ultimately, a lower grade can signal a less fertile ground for technological development, which may lead to the flight of human capital and a potential long-term economic drag as the state fails to capture the full benefits of the modern innovation economy.
In summary, the B+ rating and 1.82 score for November 2025 position the Kansas inventionINDEX in a state of positive momentum, slightly exceeding its multi-year baseline. This standing provides an excellent platform for capitalizing on the inherent advantages of a high-scoring innovative environment. The data underscores the importance of strategic policies designed to not only sustain this above-average performance but to aim for scores closer to the historical high, ensuring that the state avoids the detrimental economic effects associated with declining inventive output and secures a dynamic, competitive future.
Discussion:
In November, the Kansas inventionINDEX scored a positive sentiment which was higher than the previous year’s average and outperformed the downward trend for the year. This is similar to the prior 12 months, which experienced a downward trend.
As the economy continues to stabilize in the post-pandemic era, it remains uncertain whether any backlog of applications still exists or if the department has returned to normal processing timelines. The inventionINDEX could also be affected by lingering consequences from the pandemic, such as company closures, reduced workforces, and limited R&D capabilities, which may still be impacting current operations.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
