Kentucky Patent of the Month – August 2024
As we age, the risk of injury from a fall increases. If we are unable to get back up after a fall, we can be at risk of fatality. Knowing when an elderly patient or relative has fallen can be the difference between getting them help in time or being too late. When this type of security is provided, elderly patients are more likely to live an independent life. LogicMark, Inc. is working to bring this independence back to patient’s lives with a wearable device equipped with sensors to identify if a fall has occurred.
The fall detection device integrates a machine-learning fall detection processor with multiple sensors, including motion, height, and force sensors, to accurately identify when a fall has occurred.
What sets this device apart is its ability to adapt to the wearer’s activity level. The fall detection processor constantly monitors and updates the expected activity level of the user, allowing the device to automatically adjust the sensitivity of its sensors. For instance, if the wearer is typically less active, the system will lower the threshold for detecting a fall, ensuring that any abnormal movement triggers an alert. Conversely, for more active users, the system can increase the threshold to prevent false alarms.
The device’s smart system requires a consensus among its sensors before issuing an alert. This means that a fall is only confirmed and an alert is only triggered if a minimum number of sensors—based on the user’s activity level—detects it, significantly reducing the likelihood of false positives. Additionally, the wearable device can learn and evolve over time, using the wearer’s actual activity data to refine its detection algorithms further.
This approach not only enhances the accuracy of fall detection but also provides peace of mind to both the wearer and their loved ones. In the event of a fall, the device immediately issues an alert, enabling quick assistance, which is crucial in reducing the severity of injuries and increasing the chances of continued independent living. LogicMark’s innovative wearable device is a major step forward in personal safety technology for seniors, blending adaptability, precision, and reliability.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
