Maine Patent of the Month – October 2024

Springworks Farm has introduced an innovative system designed to enhance controlled environment agriculture (CEA) by focusing on optimizing microclimates around plants, rather than the traditional method of regulating entire greenhouse environments. This system aims to reduce resource consumption and improve plant growth by delivering targeted climate conditions directly to the microclimate around each plant, where gas exchange occurs.

At the heart of this invention is a substrate with plant retainers, where each plant is supported, alongside a series of gaseous fluid delivery ports strategically positioned near the plants. The system integrates a climate delivery subsystem that channels pressurized gaseous fluids, such as air or carbon dioxide, to the plants’ undersides through the ports. By controlling the flow and distribution of gases, this approach ensures optimal growth conditions at a localized level, without the need to adjust the broader environment.

The system is built to accommodate multiple plants simultaneously, using a network of conduits that connect each port to the climate delivery apparatus. This network enables precise control of gaseous fluid delivery based on real-time environmental data gathered by sensors in the microclimate. The microclimate control subsystem can adjust the gaseous fluid distribution dynamically, ensuring the plants receive the right mix of gases for optimal growth.

Springworks Farm’s innovation introduces a significant shift in the efficiency of CEA by focusing on the microclimate at the plant level. This localized control reduces the energy and resources spent on controlling the macro environment, offering a sustainable solution that enhances plant growth while lowering operational costs. With this technology, CEA operators can achieve greater precision and efficiency, ultimately fostering healthier plants with reduced environmental impact.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
