Maryland Patent of the Month – September 2025
The global power grid needs more capacity now. Real-time monitoring of overhead lines allows utilities to transmit more energy safely. This essential practice, known as Dynamic Line Rating (DLR), maximizes energy flow. U.S. Patent No. 12406558, titled ‘Transmission line monitoring system testing’, introduces a crucial method for validating the health of DLR systems. This innovation from CyberSecure IPS LLC ensures accuracy in critical infrastructure monitoring. The technology will boost grid reliability and overall efficiency.
Innovation in Reliability
Utilities rely on sensor data for DLR to prevent overheating power lines. Yet, sensors must maintain peak performance in harsh outdoor environments. The patent details an inventive methodology to test these installed monitoring systems.
The method simulates sensor failure or degradation across a range of operational parameters. It verifies that the overall system detects malfunctions immediately and accurately. This new testing protocol is essential for scaling DLR technology safely across modern transmission networks.
Driving Real-World Impact
The invention directly addresses a major hurdle in widespread DLR adoption. Grid operators gain immediate confidence in their real-time capacity data. This allows them to push transmission lines to their maximum safe capacity.
Maximizing existing infrastructure avoids costly new construction projects. It also better integrates fluctuating renewable energy sources into the grid. Ultimately, this leads to a more robust, cost-effective, and secure national power infrastructure.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
