Massachusetts Patent of the Month – December 2025
U.S. Patent No. 12499173, titled ‘Methods and systems for optical matrix calculation’, marks a major step in high-speed computing. SiPhox Health has patented a way to perform complex math using light rather than electricity. This technology could drastically speed up data processing while using much less energy than traditional chips.
Computing at the Speed of Light
The invention focuses on optical matrix calculation. Matrix math is the backbone of modern artificial intelligence and heavy data analysis. Standard computers use transistors to move electrons, which creates heat and slows down under heavy loads. This new system uses silicon photonics to process these calculations using light waves. By guiding light through specialized circuits, the system can perform multiple operations at once.
Impact on Healthcare and AI
This breakthrough has immediate real-world benefits. Faster processing allows for quicker diagnostic results in medical devices. It also supports the growth of AI by making the brain of the computer more efficient. Because the system relies on light, it can handle massive datasets without the massive power drain of a typical data center.
Scalable Tech for the Future
The patent describes a way to make these optical systems scalable and reliable. This means the technology can move from a lab setting into everyday devices. As the demand for instant data grows, this optical approach ensures our hardware can keep up. It bridges the gap between high-end research and practical, consumer-ready technology.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
