Mississippi Patent of the Month – August 2024

Water treatment plants are in an everlasting battle to keep a municipality’s water clean and free of contaminants. Glanris, Inc., a sustainable engineering firm, is working to simplify this battle with a novel activated carbon filtration media. To support this technology, the company has patented a method for regenerating the activated carbon filter to bring more life from a single piece.

Their patented method utilizes activated carbon made from partially charred rice husks, a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional filtration materials.

This technology stands out for its efficiency and environmental benefits. The rice husk-based activated carbon has a unique structure with a high surface area and porosity, which enhances its ability to adsorb heavy metals like copper, zinc, nickel, lead, and chromium. What makes this process particularly remarkable is its regenerability—after trapping contaminants, the carbon can be washed with an aqueous acid solution to restore its filtration capacity, allowing for multiple cycles of use. This not only reduces the cost of filtration but also minimizes waste.

The versatility of Glanris’ filtration media is evident in its ion exchange capacity, which varies with different heavy metals, demonstrating its effectiveness across a range of contaminants. Additionally, the process can be optimized further by incorporating solutions like tartaric acid or sodium bicarbonate to increase the removal efficiency, making it a flexible solution for diverse industrial needs.

By turning agricultural waste into a high-performing filtration material, Glanris is setting a new standard in water treatment. This approach not only improves the sustainability of water purification processes but also provides a scalable solution to one of the most pressing environmental challenges. Their technology is poised to make a significant impact on industries from manufacturing to mining, where efficient and eco-friendly water treatment is essential.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
