Missouri Patent of the Month – July 2024

One Wave LLC has developed an innovative method to protect electrical and electronic devices from potentially devastating electromagnetic energy disturbances. This method is particularly crucial given the threats posed by high-altitude nuclear detonations (HEMP), directed energy electromagnetic warfare (IEMI), and natural events like lightning strikes, coronal mass ejections (CME), and geomagnetic disturbances (GMD).

The invention features an Embedded Surge Protection Device (ESPD) that integrates seamlessly with alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) electrical power networks. The ESPD instantly reacts to overvoltage conditions by using a series of transient surge suppressing assemblies (TSSAs). These assemblies include transient voltage suppressors (TVSs), metal oxide varistors (MOVs), gas discharge tubes (GDTs), and other advanced materials to absorb, switch, and shunt excess voltage, thereby preventing damage to connected devices.

The method is structured in three stages, each tailored to respond to specific overvoltage levels and durations. The primary assembly handles high-level, short-duration surges, the secondary assembly addresses intermediate-level and duration surges, and the tertiary assembly manages lower-level, long-duration surges. This tiered approach ensures comprehensive protection against a range of electromagnetic disturbances, from brief pulses to prolonged exposures.

One Wave’s ESPD is designed for inline installation, making it easy to integrate into existing power networks without interfering with normal operations. It scales to various voltage and current capacities, ensuring adaptability across different applications, from residential and commercial buildings to critical infrastructure.

By mitigating the risk of electromagnetic pulses and overvoltage surges, One Wave’s innovative technology safeguards vital electrical and electronic systems, enhancing resilience against both man-made and natural electromagnetic threats.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
