Nebraska Patent of the Month – September 2024
NUtech Ventures has developed an innovative universal influenza vaccine that aims to tackle one of the world’s most pressing health challenges: the constant evolution of the influenza virus. Traditional flu vaccines must be updated annually to match the specific strains circulating each season, but NUtech’s breakthrough focuses on creating a more robust, long-lasting solution. By utilizing polypeptides with high sequence identity—90% or greater—to known viral proteins, this vaccine is designed to offer broad protection against multiple strains, including those with significant genetic differences.
This cutting-edge vaccine works by incorporating highly conserved regions of viral proteins, ensuring that even as the influenza virus mutates, the immune response triggered by the vaccine remains effective. Moreover, the invention includes multiple delivery options, such as viral vectors and nanoparticles, enhancing the vaccine’s adaptability across different methods of administration. With the potential to protect both humans and swine, this technology offers a dual advantage, addressing human flu outbreaks while minimizing economic losses in the swine industry caused by influenza.
The implications of this research are profound. If successful, NUtech Ventures’ universal influenza vaccine could eliminate the need for annual flu shots, reduce the global economic burden of flu outbreaks, and better prepare the world for future pandemics. By targeting a wide array of viral sub-types, this vaccine represents a significant leap forward in the fight against influenza.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
