New Jersey Patent of the Month – January 2025

GAF Energy has revolutionized the roofing industry with its innovative roofing system that seamlessly integrates solar technology with traditional roofing materials. This invention addresses a critical need in the renewable energy sector: a roof-integrated photovoltaic system that enhances installation efficiency, serviceability, and water-shedding capabilities. By combining a water-shedding layer with solar cells, GAF Energy has created a solution that not only protects structures from the elements but also generates clean energy.

The roofing system comprises a roof deck divided into two adjacent areas. The first area features a water-shedding layer with a reveal portion, while the second area is covered by overlapping roofing shingles. The shingles and water-shedding layer are installed in such a way that their ends align without overlapping, ensuring optimal water drainage and a sleek, uniform appearance. The reveal portions of both the water-shedding layer and the shingles remain exposed, with the former having a different width than the latter, adding to the system’s functionality and aesthetic appeal.

A standout feature of this invention is the integration of solar cells above the water-shedding layer. This design allows for efficient energy generation without compromising the roof’s protective qualities. The system also includes flashing members installed beneath the water-shedding layer and shingles, further enhancing durability and weather resistance. In some configurations, the system eliminates the need for flashing between the two areas of the roof deck, simplifying installation and reducing material costs.

GAF Energy’s method for installing this roofing system is equally innovative. The process involves strategically layering the water-shedding materials and shingles, ensuring precise alignment and optimal performance. The system’s flexibility allows for variations in installation order, accommodating different project requirements. By prioritizing both functionality and ease of installation, GAF Energy has created a roofing solution that sets a new standard for sustainable building practices. This invention not only advances solar technology but also redefines what a roof can do, making it a cornerstone of modern, energy-efficient construction.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
