New Jersey Patent of the Month – June 2025
Continuum Dynamics Inc. has received U.S. Patent No. 12319432 for a new system titled ‘Wing-mounted turbine for generating electricity and increasing thrust’. The invention places a compact turbine at an aircraft’s wingtip, capturing energy from air vortices to simultaneously generate electricity and reduce drag. This dual-function design boosts flight efficiency while supporting onboard power demands.
Compact Power Generation at the Wingtip
Instead of letting wingtip vortices go to waste, this system harnesses them. A small turbine mounted at or near the wingtip spins as vortex air flows through it. The turbine connects to a generator that supplies electricity for avionics or other systems. Simultaneously, it produces a small thrust boost by countering drag forces.
Flexible, Optimized Design
The patent outlines a method for configuring the turbine’s design based on flight conditions and aircraft needs. Engineers can adjust blade count, pitch, and sweep to favor more power output, greater thrust, or a mix of both. This adaptability supports integration into a range of aircraft, including commercial jets, drones, or military platforms.
Fuel Savings and Emissions Reduction
By turning previously wasted aerodynamic energy into usable power, the system could lower fuel consumption and reduce emissions. Aircraft operators could benefit from lower operating costs and greener performance without major structural changes.
Ready for Testing
Further development will focus on wind tunnel validation and real-world flight tests. If successful, this innovation could signal a new wave of sustainable aerospace design.
