North Dakota Patent of the Month – August 2024
701x Inc., an agtech firm focused on cattle management, has developed a new approach to livestock monitoring with a system designed to enhance the management of large herds with advanced precision.
At the heart of this innovation are smart, sensor-equipped tags attached to each animal. These tags not only track vital physical parameters like location, temperature, and movement, but they also communicate with one another to form a dynamic mesh network. This network allows the tags to share data in real-time, creating an efficient and reliable way to monitor the entire herd.
One tag, known as the “optimum tag,” takes on the responsibility of aggregating data from other animals within its range. This data is then transmitted to a remote system, where it can be analyzed to provide comprehensive insights into the animals’ health, behavior, and overall conditions. Whether it’s tracking the movement patterns or identifying signs of illness, the system ensures that farmers and ranchers have all the information they need at their fingertips.
The system operates on a smart, condition-based communication model, transmitting data only when necessary—whether triggered by time, environmental conditions, or the health status of the livestock. This not only saves power but ensures timely responses to potential issues. By offering real-time data and herd-level insights, the 701x system is set to transform livestock management, making it more efficient, responsive, and scalable.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
