Oklahoma Patent of the Month – July 2025
A new U.S. patent could make minimally invasive surgery smarter. U.S. Patent No. 12357152, titled ‘Artificial intelligence-based medical 3D scanner’, describes a compact 3D scanner. This device aims to provide real-time, millimeter-accurate measurements inside the body. It works with laparoscopic and robotic surgical systems. The technology may lead to more precise and autonomous procedures.
Advanced Imaging for Surgeons
The system uses multiple cameras and optical sources. It projects patterns of light into a surgical area. Processors then analyze the captured images. This process creates a detailed 3D map. It gives surgeons critical data about tissues and organs. They can measure distances and monitor instrument movements. This helps surgeons avoid damaging surrounding tissues.
Enabling Autonomous Robotic Surgery
This invention by Optecks, LLC could improve robotic surgery. The system can provide control signals. These signals can guide a robotic system. It allows for autonomous or semi-autonomous operation. This capability could automate tasks like suturing a hernia. It may also help an endoscope navigate tight spaces. This innovation could boost a procedure’s accuracy. It may also improve patient outcomes.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
