Rhode Island Patent of the Month – October 2025
A new orthopedic technology promises to revolutionize fracture repair, offering a customizable, minimally invasive solution for broken and compromised bones. U.S. Patent No. 12446939, titled ‘Apparatus for delivery of reinforcing materials to bone’, outlines an ingenious system for internal bone stabilization. Developed by IlluminOss Medical, Inc. , the invention uses a unique light-curable polymer delivered via a specialized catheter and balloon system. This innovation targets fractures in weak or osteoporotic bone, where traditional plates and screws often fail.
Precision and Customization
The core of the apparatus is a balloon inserted into the bone cavity. Surgeons infuse a liquid reinforcing mixture into this balloon. The mixture expands the balloon, which gently manipulates the fractured bone fragments into correct alignment. Crucially, the surgeon can adjust the balloon’s inflation and deflation in real-time. Once the bone reaches the ideal position, a fiber inside the balloon guides light to cure and harden the mixture. This process creates a custom-fitted, patient-specific internal implant. The balloon’s outer surface can even be coated with drugs or growth factors, enhancing healing at the site.
A New Standard for Bone Repair
This minimally invasive approach could significantly reduce surgical trauma and recovery times for patients. The photodynamic stabilization system offers immediate, robust internal support. By conforming perfectly to the bone’s inner wall, the hardened implant distributes stress evenly. This innovative apparatus is poised to become the new standard for treating challenging fractures, particularly in elderly populations suffering from osteoporosis. It replaces cumbersome pins and casts with a tailored, high-tech polymer solution.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
