South Carolina Patent of the Month – December 2022
Scout Boats, Inc. designs and manufactures world-class luxury model boats. In an effort to make your on-the-water experience like no other, the company continually develops trend-setting and innovative designs that push the bounds and bring a sophisticated edge to their boats. From improving efficiency and performance to elevating comfort and safety, Scout Boats is a true innovator.
One such innovation has been recently granted a patent, bringing a bow-mounted detecting system to their lineup.
Traditional motorized anchor systems are mounted so that all motorized parts are stored within the vessel and the anchor itself extends out of an outer surface of the wall. While this means the boater does not need to toss out and pull in the anchor by hand, it can also cause some other inconveniences. And nobody wants to be inconvenienced when on the water.
These traditional designs make it difficult to tell where the anchor is relative to the boat if you’ve drifted during your stay. Without a good view of the anchor, it might become tangled or otherwise stuck. The boater would then need to lean over the edge of the boat to try and see the anchor. Scout Boats’ bow-mounted detecting system removes this need, tracking the anchor’s position relative to the boat.
A camera gathers information, relaying images to a display that the boater can easily and safely view from the helm before pulling in the anchor. Ofcourse, this camera does more than just track your anchor. With increased visibility, you now have a view of any swimmers, animals, or obstructions directly in front of your bow. This feature adds a whole new safety aspect to the on-the-water experience.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
