South Carolina Patent of the Month – June 2022

The world learned just how much a mask can impede communication. It muffles your voice making it hard to hear. It blocks the view of your mouth so those who read lips are cut off as well. While mask mandates have largely been lifted, there are still many people wearing masks. From healthcare to industrial, respiratory masks are essential to protecting wearers and creating a barrier to air-borne contaminants.

ZVerse, Inc., a product development company, has designed a respiratory mask that meets all the needs of personal protective equipment without limiting communication. Their mask is clear so that your mouth is no longer obscured, allowing others to read your lips as you speak. The polycarbonate shell is also designed to not distort the wearer’s voice, allowing clear and understandable communication.

The mask is set up with a breathing chamber which is equipped with filters. A vented outer wall allows air to pass in both directions to accommodate the wearer’s breathing cycle. A soft silicone seal ensures the mask conforms to the shape of the wearer’s face for optimal protection. The special polycarbonate materials used, and the effective seal prevent fogging of glasses. An anti-fog coating also ensures the clear plastic of the mask itself does not fog, preventing any obscuring of the window.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses?
