South Dakota Patent of the Month – January 2022

The classic image associated with graduation caps is the age-old tradition of throwing them in the air to symbolize the end of your schooling. Another well known tradition is moving the tassel from one side to the other when officially receiving your diploma. While these scenes always go smoothly in the movies, wearing these mortarboard hats in real life is rife with small nuisances. The tassel rarely stays on the right side and the wearer often has to repeatedly correct it’s position or have the tassel slide to the back.

TassLoc, LLC has decided it’s time to improve this design, creating a simple but effective way to secure the tassel in place. The design creates a clip which can be attached to the edge of the cap. The clip itself is made of two small plates secured together. A small extension catch is attached to the clip and is used to hold the tassel in place. A clip could be placed on two adjacent sides of the cap so that the tassel can be held in place in the first position, then easily switched over to the other side when the wearer has officially graduated. The design is small and discrete, not taking away from the traditional aesthetic of the graduation cap, while making sure the tassel isn’t hitting you in the nose or sliding down the cap.
