Tennessee Patent of the Month – August 2024
Sherman+Reilly Inc., a leading line stringing equipment manufacturer, has developed a novel method for enhancing the efficiency and safety of power transmission line installations with their intelligent stringing operation system. This system introduces advanced sensor-driven automation, allowing precise adjustments to pulling and tension forces during the installation of electrical conductors. By collecting real-time data from sensors positioned on both the puller and tensioner subsystems, the invention adjusts forces dynamically to optimize the stringing process, minimizing the risk of errors or damage.
A key feature of this invention is its ability to autonomously evaluate proximity and alignment data as the running board—a component that guides the conductor—approaches the gates or blocks through which the conductor is installed. This allows the system to make real-time adjustments to tension and pulling forces, ensuring smooth and accurate installation, even in complex or challenging terrains. In addition, video sensors can relay live footage to a monitoring center, enabling operators to oversee the process remotely, further enhancing control and safety.
This intelligent system eliminates the need for human spotters who would traditionally oversee the process, reducing the risk of injury and increasing operational efficiency. By integrating autonomous and remote monitoring features, Sherman+Reilly’s invention not only revolutionizes the electrical conductor installation process but also sets new standards for safety and precision in the utility industry.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
