Texas Patent of the Month – March 2021

The sinus node is the heart’s natural pacemaker. When the sinus node is no longer functioning correctly, the body is unable to regulate it’s heart rate. A common solution is an artificial pacemaker implant. These have many limitations including battery replacements, electrical failure, and an inability to be hormone regulated. As an alternative, many scientists have attempted to develop a natural pacemaker solution. They have tested many methods of converting cells into pacemaker cells using stem cells of all kinds. InGeneron, Inc is the first to successfully create new functional pacemaker cells.

InGeneron’s method uses adipose tissues from the patient to cultivate adult stem cells (regenerative cells). They reprogrammed these regenerative cells to form pacemaker cells and Purkinje cells. Purkinje cells are known to stimulate myocardial cells to contract. These new purkinje fibers spontaneously surround and connect with the larger pacemaker cells. This combination forms an induced sinoatrial body which is capable of regulating heartbeats effectively.

About InGeneron, Inc

InGeneron is a cell therapy company that enables novel, evidence-based treatments designed to heal certain chronic conditions using a patient’s own regenerative cells processed at the bedside for same-day application. They produce a platform of medical devices that process adipose (body fat) tissue and rapidly and efficiently isolate adipose-derived regenerative cells (ADRCs) to be reintroduced into the patient.

Are you developing new technology? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
