Utah Patent of the Month – February 2025
In a move set to transform credibility assessment, Converus has introduced a revolutionary system that listens more closely to the eyes than the words themselves. Their latest innovation eliminates the need for written tests and human examiners, leveraging eye-tracking technology and spoken prompts to deliver a fully automated credibility analysis experience.
At the heart of the system is an infrared camera that monitors micro-behaviors—like pupil dilation, blink rate, and gaze fixation—as subjects listen to a series of audio statements. These aren’t just any statements; each is carefully structured with introductory, topic, and declaration phrases to probe responses linked to specific behaviors or issues. As subjects listen, they focus on a neutral image onscreen, helping standardize gaze data while the system silently observes.
After each statement, visual cues prompt the subject to respond, and the system then analyzes their reactions in milliseconds—comparing them to expected answers and calculating a credibility score. This score, paired with response timing and accuracy, helps determine the likelihood of deception.
What makes Converus’ system stand out isn’t just its precision—it’s its accessibility. By removing reading comprehension from the equation, it opens the door to broader populations while reducing examiner bias and fatigue. And with built-in safeguards to alert if a subject looks away or fails to respond, the test maintains its integrity from start to finish.
With this invention, Converus is not just refining how we detect deception—they’re redefining the process altogether.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
