Vermont Patent of the Month – August 2025
Vermont-based gear company Renoun LLC secures U.S. Patent No. 12377340, titled ‘Snow sliding devices and methods of manufacture thereof’. This new patent introduces a groundbreaking approach to ski and snowboard design. It integrates a non-Newtonian material directly into the core of the device. The material’s stiffness changes with speed and force, promising a ski that adapts to changing terrain. This innovation could revolutionize how winter sports enthusiasts experience the mountains.
Smart Materials, Better Performance
The patent outlines a system where a material’s composition varies throughout the ski or snowboard. The core contains a mix of non-Newtonian and Newtonian materials. A higher proportion of the non-Newtonian compound is placed in areas prone to vibration. When a rider hits rough snow, the material instantly stiffens. This damps unwanted chatter and creates a smoother ride. On groomed runs, the material remains flexible. It allows for easy turning and maneuverability.
Innovation for Every Rider
This technology addresses a long-standing issue in snow sports equipment. Skis and snowboards must balance flexibility for control with rigidity for stability. This invention eliminates that trade-off. It provides a single device that excels in all conditions. This could change the market for high-performance gear. It offers a new level of vibration dampening and handling. The patent emphasizes the invention’s ability to create a more durable and adaptable product.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
