Washington Patent of the Month – January 2025

In the ever-evolving world of wearable technology, Innovega Inc. has taken a groundbreaking leap with its latest invention—a method for designing custom contact lenses that seamlessly integrate with display eyewear or function independently. This innovation is not just a step forward in personalized eyewear; it’s a giant leap toward redefining how we interact with augmented reality (AR) and everyday vision correction.

At the heart of this invention is a sophisticated process that begins with capturing detailed images of a user’s eye while it’s illuminated. Using advanced image sensors, Innovega’s system extracts precise metrics such as the sagittal depth of the eye, corneal diameter, pupil position, and even the curvature of the cornea. These metrics are then processed to determine the optimal parameters for crafting a contact lens tailored to the user’s unique ocular anatomy. Whether the lens is intended for use with AR display eyewear or as a standalone vision correction tool, the system ensures a perfect fit and unparalleled comfort.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this invention is its ability to account for minute details, such as the position of the eyelids and the aperture height between them. This level of precision allows the system to design lenses with non-rotation features, ensuring they stay perfectly aligned on the eye. Additionally, the method calculates the base curve, diameter, and sagittal depth of the lens, ensuring it conforms precisely to the user’s eye shape. For AR applications, the system even factors in the position of the pupil or first Purkinje image to align the lens’s central optical feature with the user’s natural line of sight.

Innovega’s invention also introduces the concept of “measurement eyewear,” a device worn by the user during the imaging process. This eyewear, equipped with light sources and image sensors, captures critical data such as vertex distance and pupillary distance, further refining the lens design. The result is a contact lens that not only enhances visual clarity but also integrates flawlessly with AR displays, offering users an immersive and comfortable experience.

This innovation represents a fusion of biometrics, optics, and wearable technology, setting a new standard for personalized eyewear. By combining cutting-edge imaging techniques with advanced lens design, Innovega Inc. is paving the way for a future where our eyes are not just windows to the world but gateways to enhanced reality.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
