Washington Patent of the Month – September 2022

Lumotive, LLC is known for their state-of-the-art transformative optical semiconductors which have enabled LiDAR 2.0 capabilities. Their intention is to create software-defined LiDAR to be used in consumer electronics, industrial automation, robotics, and automotive applications. They develop specialized Light Control Metasurface (LCM™) beam steering chips to bring advanced perception capabilities to LiDAR technology.

To support this technology, Lumotive has recently patented their design for optical reflectors with liquid crystal metasurfaces and cross-backplanes. This tunable metasurface uses a parallel array of elongated resonator rails. The controller then selectively applies a voltage differential pattern to the rails in order to adjust the phase response. The liquid crystal is positioned within the optical field region between each rail.

These tunable metasurfaces are great for use in 3D beam shaping and for 2D and 1D beam steering. By adjusting the phase response with selectively applied voltage differentials can control beam steering. This patented beam steering technology contributes to the company’s LCM™ semiconductors. In fact, Lumotive’s LCMs enable the industry’s first software-defined LiDAR with advanced perception capabilities.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
