West Virginia Patent of the Month – May 2025
Modulation Therapeutics Inc. has unveiled a new class of cancer-fighting compounds in U.S. Patent Application No. 20250136642, titled ‘Cyclic peptide compounds and methods of use thereof’. These synthetic peptides are engineered to combat aggressive cancers like multiple myeloma, lung cancer, and prostate cancer. Designed for flexibility, the compounds can be delivered orally, intravenously, or by inhalation.
New strategy for drug-resistant cancers
This invention focuses on cyclic β-hairpin peptidomimetics—engineered molecules that mimic naturally occurring peptides. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, these compounds are tailored to bind selectively to cancer cells, reducing collateral damage to healthy tissue. That could translate to fewer side effects and better outcomes for patients.
Multiple routes of administration
The patent outlines delivery options beyond standard injections. Oral, pulmonary, and even nasal methods are viable, broadening how treatments might reach patients. This adaptability may improve patient compliance and extend use across healthcare settings.
Filling a critical treatment gap
Multiple myeloma and EGFR-driven lung cancer are often resistant to existing therapies. The newly patented compounds aim to meet this unmet need by offering a different therapeutic mechanism. For patients with few options, this development could signal new hope.
Broader implications for oncology
With further development, these peptides could transform cancer care for some of the most difficult-to-treat cases. The invention reflects a growing trend in biotech: precision-targeted, patient-friendly therapies that push the boundaries of current treatment models.
