West Virginia Patent of the Month – September 2024
Modulation Therapeutics has made significant strides in cancer treatment with the development of a novel class of compounds aimed at combating diseases like multiple myeloma, EGFR-driven lung cancer, and prostate cancer. These compounds, specifically cyclic β-hairpin peptidomimetic compounds, have shown remarkable anti-cancer activity. The innovation lies in the ability of these compounds to enhance biological activity and bioavailability through the incorporation of certain linkers and side chains, such as a cysteine side chain. This modification not only increases potency but also helps in achieving higher biological efficacy by leveraging the positive charge at physiological pH.
These compounds are designed to be highly effective at targeting and disrupting cancer cell functions. The system works by binding to specific molecular sites, thereby inhibiting the growth and spread of cancer cells. Additionally, their formulation in pharmaceutical compositions allows for oral or injectable administration, providing flexibility in treatment options for patients. The incorporation of a cysteine side chain further optimizes the compound’s interaction with its targets, making it a promising therapeutic agent for treating multiple myeloma and other cancers.
The potential of these compounds extends beyond their immediate anti-cancer effects. By providing a deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms that drive cancer progression, these compounds offer a new avenue for improving patient outcomes. Their unique structure and targeted action provide hope for more effective treatments that could address the underlying causes of cancer, especially in cases resistant to conventional therapies. With ongoing research and clinical studies, Modulation Therapeutics’ compounds could pave the way for a new generation of cancer treatments that are both potent and precise.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
